In this case study, we will examine our collaboration with David Lee in designing and creating their innovative Infipur product. Our team delivered comprehensive product design and development solutions, encompassing concept generation, prototype creation, evaluation, and production.

The Challenge

David Lee sought our assistance in developing a unique water filter that would differentiate itself in the competitive military market. He had a preliminary idea but required our expertise to materialize it.

Problem

Military operations often take place in remote, arid, or disaster-stricken regions where access to clean drinking water is limited or non-existent. Ensuring the availability of safe drinking water for military personnel is crucial to maintain their health, well-being, and combat readiness.

The challenges faced in providing drinking water to the military include:

  • Limited water sources.
  • Many regions where military operations are conducted lack reliable water sources or have contaminated water supplies
  • Logistical challenges: Transporting large quantities of water to remote locations can be costly, time-consuming, and may require significant manpower and resources.
  • Water purification: In situations where available water sources are contaminated, there is a need for effective and efficient water purification methods to remove harmful contaminants and pathogens.
  • Energy requirements: Traditional water purification systems often require electricity or fuel, which may not be readily available in remote locations or during field operations.
  • Solution

    We initiated the project by carrying out comprehensive research on David Lee's target market and analyzing their competitors within the military sector. Following that, we engaged in multiple cooperative brainstorming sessions with the client to sharpen their product vision.

    Portable water purification systems: Develop compact, lightweight, and easy-to-use water purification systems that can be carried by individual soldiers or deployed in small groups. These systems should be capable of purifying water from various sources, including rivers, lakes, and wells, using filtration, chemical treatment, or UV disinfection.

    Developing process

    Concept Development: In this stage, we conducted extensive research to understand the needs and requirements of our target audience, as well as to analyze our competitors in the market. We brainstormed innovative ideas and evaluated the most promising design concepts based on factors such as functionality, user experience, and feasibility.

    3D CAD Design: We then transformed the chosen concept into a detailed 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model. Our engineers and designers collaborated to create the portable UV disinfection device, specifying dimensions, materials, and components. We tested and analyzed the design virtually, making any necessary refinements to produce a production-ready model.

    PCB Design & Firmware Development:After the 3D CAD design was finalized, we moved on to designing the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and developing the firmware for the device. Our team of engineers worked on creating the electrical schematic and laying out the components on the PCB, ensuring that the design was optimized for performance, reliability, and cost. At the same time, they developed the firmware, writing the code to control the device's functions, interfaces, and communication protocols.

    Embedded System Development:In this stage, we integrated the firmware with the hardware components, including the microcontroller and sensors, to create a complete embedded system. We tested the system to verify that it met the requirements and specifications and made any necessary modifications to ensure its optimal performance. This stage was crucial in bringing the product to life and making it ready for mass production.

    Prototyping & Testing: We created physical prototypes of the device using techniques like 3D printing or CNC machining. These prototypes underwent rigorous testing to evaluate their functionality, durability, and user experience. We made further design iterations and improvements based on any issues or shortcomings identified during testing.

    Manufacturing Support: Once we achieved a successful prototype, we provided manufacturing support by collaborating with manufacturers capable of producing the device at scale.

    Following numerous testing and iteration cycles, we successfully delivered a final product that surpassed our client's expectations. Since its launch, the Infipur has garnered praise from customers and industry experts alike.
